Arctic Winter Games, March 4 – 10, 2012 in Whitehorse, Yukon

The Arctic Winter Games (http://www.arcticwintergames.org/) is a high profile circumpolar sport competition for northern and arctic athletes. The Games provide an opportunity to strengthen sport development in the participants’ jurisdictions, to promote the benefits of sport, to build partnerships, and to promote culture and values. The Games celebrate sport, social exchange and cultures. The Games provide an opportunity for the developing athlete to compete in friendly competition while sharing cultural values from northern regions around the world.

Every two years Alaska athletes have an opportunity to participate in AWG.  This season the event is being held in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada.   Our team consistis of 12 athletes and 2 coaches (one female, one male).
6 athletes (3 men, 3 women): YOB  1994 – 1995, these athletes are referred to as Juniors.
6 athletes (3 men, 3 women): YOB 1996 – 1997, these athletes are referred to as Juveniles.

Events contested at AWG: Slalom, Giant Slalom and Dual Slalom.
No athlete may attend both AWG and Western Region Championships.

Alaska Selection Method:  Athletes will be ranked using the method described for J3 selection process utilizing Alyeska Cup races only due to February 15th deadline for team selection.  Note that only giant slalom and slalom runs will be used for ranking athletes since super-g will not be contested at the AWG.

Team Fees: Cost for participation is $650/athlete + coaching fees. Coaching fees will be determined
prior to team selection. Fees are to be paid to Alaska Division.
Passports are required and can take up to 8 weeks for processing.


Academic Team Alaska – due November 1, 2011

The Alaska Academic Team is comprised of athletes enrolled in junior high school (7th and 8th grades) or high school representing a racing program in Alaska who maintained a 3.5 gpa or higher for the entire academic year.

Alaska Academic Team members receive certificates of accomplishment from the Alaska Division and a Divisional patch. To be considered for academic team Alaska, athletes must submit their transcripts or both semesters’ report cards to their coach and the coach must forward the list of qualified scholar/athletes to the Alaska Division administrator by November 1 each year.

Independent athletes should submit their grades directly to the administrator via email at admin@ussaak.org.


2011/12 Brian Russell Memorial Fund Scholarship Application

The 2011/12 Brian Russell Memorial Fund Scholarship Application is now available.

The mission of the Brian Russell Memorial Fund is to promote and inspire the love of junior ski racing and provide financial support to developing junior ski racers. The Fund is structured so that athletes age 15 and older are encouraged to be active in year-round training and racing, maintain 3.0 GPA’s or better, be positive role models and remain drug and alcohol free.

Over the years the Fund has awarded many scholarships to outstanding athlete / scholars. Recently the scholarship amount has grown to $2,000.  If you have an athlete that meets the above requirements please encourage them to submit an application.
